Alnmouth is a beautiful village located on the coast in the county of Northumberland in England.  With a long sandy beach and a river, this is a scenic place for a self-catering holiday.

There are a number of quaint tea shops where you can while away the time in Alnmouth and enjoy some tea and cake.  Along the main street, you can also find the Schooner Hotel, which dates back to the 17th century and is reputed to be the most haunted hotel in the whole of Britain.    Keen golfers will also be interested to hear that the town has a golf course, not far from the beach.  One of the best parts of town in terms of its scenic quality is down by Riverside Road where you can enjoy wonderful coastal views.  A walk here, along the coastal path, past the park comes highly recommended.  Don’t miss the much photographed pretty colourful seaside cottages that you can see!      

When planning your trip to Northumberland we recommend that you do your research on places to go and things to see in the local area before your holiday so that you get the best out of your cottage break.  Don’t worry if you have left it until the last minute though, a visit to the local Tourist Information Office where they offer free advice, should help you decide how to spend your time.  One thing is for sure, you should have plenty of choice.  Although none of Northumbria’s beaches are currently blue flag award winners, many of the beaches offer wonderful expansive stretches of sand and are great places to spend time.

By virtue of Alnmouth’s location on the Northumberland coast, a selection of pretty seaside villages are just a short, easy drive away.  Bamburgh Castle is one of Northumberland’s top attractions and well worth a visit, as is Holy Island with its castle.  Take note though when visiting Holy Island, you can only travel on the causeway at certain times of the day, according to the tides.  Do make sure that you get full information on tidal times before you visit as you don’t want to get washed away!
