Kells Co. Meath (7 miles from Fordstown), with a population of approximately 5.500 is an old monastic settlement and currently a Heritage town.  It is famous for The Book of Kells - a beautiful illuminated manuscript which dates from the 9th century.  A perfect copy of the book can be seen in the town's Heritage Center.  Five important High Crosses depicting Christian biblical stories and Celtic patterns are also in Kells, along with an 11th century Round Tower - whose original use is hotly disputed.

For Golf lovers Kells Headfort Golf Club has a wonderful 36 hole complex.  Located beside the 18th century World Heritage Headfort House (with beautiful rooms by Roberrt Adam), the course is surrounded by ancient trees and lush countryside.  It is considered one of Ireland's most scenic golf courses.
