If you want to sample the delights on foot, head for North Sands, park the car then amble into Salcombe along the lane.  A longer walk is from Sharpitor just above South Sands (though you can cheat by catching the little boat from the beach there).  The rest of the party need not know, just arrange to meet them at Whitesands Quay, nip into the hip hotel on the beach for a special snack whilst watching the action on the beach, then pop onto the boat arriving just ahead of them in Salcombe!
