Porthleven is a Cornish town and the most southerly fishing port in Great Britain found on the peninsula of Cornwall. The harbour was originally developed for refuge as this was part of the Cornish coast that was recognised as a black spot for wrecks. Close by the Loe Bar is still infamous for being a dangerous spot to swim and surf.

Porthleven has exploited its location and its exposure to powerful sea swells to become famous as one of the best regarded surfing spots in Britain, but is definitely not for the beginner or for the faint hearted. Porthleven is also home to some beautiful protected sites of interest including a disused lead mine and Cornwall’s largest natural lake formed by the barrier beach, Loe Bar. The town has a beautiful harbour which is appreciated at its best in the summer months with quaint fishing boats and lovely fishermen’s cottages. As it is at a very southerly point to Cornwall, visitors on a self-catering cottage holiday by the sea can also enjoy the delights of Land’s End and the Lizard peninsula.
