St Davids is particularly famous for being the UK’s smallest city, due to the presence of the 12th century cathedral in roughly what is now the centre of this village, which has a community of just 1500 members. This small city in Pembrokeshire has plenty to offer for self-catering holidays.
The village is attractively laid out, and is situated in the centre of a peninsula, offering superb and extensive walking possibilities at different stretches of the Pembrokeshire coastal path. The city lies beautifully on the River Alun on St David’s Peninsula. There are several popular tourist attractions including a church, public parks, castles, ancient buildings, museums, and art galleries.
Within the cathedral precincts is the Bishop’s Palace, ruins of what would have been an imposing palace built in the 13th century, entrance for which is remarkably reasonable and indeed free to members of English Heritage or CADW.
It is less than half a mile from the excellent beach at Carfai (limited parking), and a little over one mile to Whiteands, a massive expansive of sand, with the sought after European Blue Flag award.
A little known fact about St Davids is that it is the only city lying with a National Park, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park which primarily consists of a strip of land one mile or so wide following the full coast within this County of Pembrokeshire. In whichever direction you go for 15 or more miles the cliff-tops offer outstanding views.
The coast is well served by a year round bus service (although frequency increases between Easter and late September) offering extensive opportunities for linear coastal walking. Porthclais, a truly attractive fishing harbour (one of several within 7 miles) is less than a mile away.
Though it is the smallest city in Britain, there many places to see here such as Coetan Arthur, Porth Clais, Ramsey Island, St David`s Head Hill Fort, St David’s Bishop’s Palace, St David’s Cathedral, St Justinian, St Non`s Well, St Non’s Bay, The Pink House Gallery, and Whitesands Bay. The main attraction of this place here is a ruined Bishop`s Palace. Pembrokeshire Coast Path located here is famous for cliff scenery and historic site, which is located a mile away.
Apart from these attractions, the town of St Davids is a great place for a self-catering holiday. Types of self-catering accommodation available here include villas, small cottages, log cabins, apartments and holiday chalets. Self-catering cottages can be a perfect option for families and large groups, especially when there are kids and pets.
