Watlington is a small historic market town in Oxfordshire about 20 miles from Oxford and 10 miles from Thame. The town finds itself amongst the Chiltern hills and has an unusual marking carved into the chalk escarpment of Watlington hill. The Watlington white mark was put there by Edward Horne who felt the church would look much more impressive if it had a spire and therefore carved the shape of one into the hillside. There is record of Watlington being in the Domesday Book in 1086 and like many towns in the are it has a well preserved olde- worlde feel about it due to its half-timbered and ancient buildings and houses.
