Centrally located Sarlat, also known as Sarlat la Canéda, could be a great base for a self-catering holiday in the Dordogne. Possibly the most atmospheric and appealing town in the Dordogne, this large bustling town is home to some absolutely stunning medieval architecture, a good choice of cafes and restaurants, plus plenty of shops. The medieval streets that wind up and around the town center are particularly mesmerizing. All of these facilities, though, come at a price; traffic in Sarlat, particularly on weekends, can be slow-going, so driving in and out of the town center on a weekend can be time-consuming at peak hours.
