We regret that there is a sad lack of availability in Northern Madeira at present.

We suggest that you try our advanced Cottage Search facility to enter your basic essentials such as maximum number of guests, number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms and so on. This will produce a list of possible holiday homes. Next, reduce the list by adding any other points that might be of lesser importance such as near nature reserves or barbecue.
The Northern part of Madeira tends to be the less visited part of the island. If you are looking for a remote self catering holiday in Madeira then you may want to find accommodation somewhere peaceful in the quieter North of the island. Due to the roads and terrain even when using the main dual carriageways it is quite a drive from Funchal to the North of Madeira.
The main town in the north of Madeira is Santana. Santana appears in many postcards with photos of interesting old thatched houses. In reality though there is just a small strip of these thatched houses in Santana and even these have a distinctly tacky feel. Santana is a pleasant enough place to stop off for a coffee but doesn’t have a great deal to recommend it. The most charming aspect of Santana is that this part of the island has a real natural feel to it where you can get a feel for rustic life in Madeira.
Inland around 5km from Santana is Queimadas with its forest and walking opportunities. Highlights here include a waterfall and stunning views of Santana.
Sao Vicente is an attractive northernly coastal town. There are interesting caves to visit near this picturesque town and another nearby attraction is the volcano visitor centre and lava tunnels. There are a number of appealing beaches on the northern part of Madeira. Ribeira da Janela is a pebble beach with attractive scenery. Praia da Laje in Seixal is another good pebble beach.
The North part of Madeira is most likely to appeal to those looking for a self catering holiday somewhere reasonably peaceful with good opportunities for trekking.
