Centrally located Sarlat, also known as Sarlat la Canada could be a great base for a self-catering holiday in the Dordogne. Possibly the most atmospheric and appealing town in the Dordogne, this large bustling town is home to some absolutely stunning medieval architecture, a good choice of cafes and restaurants, plus plenty of shops. The medieval streets that wind up and round the town centre are particularly mesmerising.
All of these facilities though do come at a price; traffic in Sarlat particularly at weekends can be slow-going so driving in and out of the town centre on a weekend can be time consuming at peak hours. So beautiful is this town that it is no well kept secret!
What Sarlat Offers for a Self-Catering Break
With a town centre brimful with marvellous medieval buildings that date back to the 14th and 15th centuries and winding medieval streets, it's surprising that Sarlat is not yet a UNESCO World Heritage site. Within the town there is a Tourist Information Office where you can pick up hints, tips and leaflets on local attractions. There are various points of interest within Sarlat's town centre including the Cathedral, the spookily named La Lanterne des morts (the Lantern of the Dead) and of course the atmospheric town square.
There is a regular Saturday market in Sarlat, and at Christmas time a charming Christmas market.
