A self-catering break in a cottage in Burnsall Brings the Wonders of the Dales
Burnsall, a North Yorkshire village next to the River Wharfe in Lower Wharfedale, is much admired for its picturesque qualities. One of its most attractive features is the old, Grade II listed, 5-arched packhorse bridge and the riverside village green is a great place to relax and chat. Families into outdoor pursuits will enjoy themselves here, especially if they are into walking or fishing. Day Tickets for fishing on the River Wharfe are available from the area’s shops and trout is a popular catch. Walkers have the choice of numerous routes in the area, including those on top of the surrounding moors.
St. Wilfrid’s Church, a Grade I listed building, has a permanent display under the title, Vikings in Burnsall, which contains a collection of ancient stones and crosses. The Viking connection goes back to the beginnings of the village as an Anglo-Viking settlement. Also of historical significance is an alabaster panel from the 1400s, which depicts the Adoration of the Magi.
Runners come from all over Yorkshire to take part in the annual Burnsall Classic Fell Race every August. This tradition goes back to the 1870s and is part of the Burnsall Feast Sports, which is an even older tradition. Other races also take place and the village green is the site for family entertainment, such as Punch & Judy and coconut shies. If you don’t have the energy to participate in the fell race (one of only a few remaining in the UK), you can still go along to cheer and show your support.
For a very pleasant day out, Parcevall Hall Gardens, at Skyreholme near Appletreewick, offers 24 acres of woodland and formal gardens. It’s a horticulturist’s idea of heaven with plants representing different parts of the world, including the Himalayas. Features include rhododendrons, alpine plants, a rose garden and a rock garden and the hillside position affords terrific views of the Dales. Guided group tours can be booked in advance.
For anyone interested in the world beneath their feet, Stump Cross Caverns, between Pateley Bridge and Grassington, is one of the most impressive show caves in the country. For a trip out with a difference, these limestone caves are a fascinating experience for all the family. The system was discovered in 1860 by miners but was never exploited for any minerals. Instead, it has been an attraction for thousands of members of the public. The visitor’s centre tells its history including the discovery of various animal remains, including bison, deer and wolverines. The gift shop has souvenirs and there is a tea room. A short video film is shown in the Lecture Theatre about the history of the caves and how they were formed over millions of years.
This part of the world has a wide variety of lovely villages, market towns and geological wonders, not to mention the majesty of the Yorkshire scenery. Burnsall is a portal to it all and an opportunity to enjoy village life and the best way to experience the daily life of a village is to rent a cottage or holiday home for a week or two.
