Weardale is in the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are 11 villages in the dale, originally formed to accomodate agricultural workers and miners. At the top of the dale Cowshill is close to the Killhope Wheel visitors centre, which is a great day out for families to enjoy the mining experience.
A little lower is Iresenhopeburn, with the Weardale Museum providing local history and giving an insite into life 100 years and more ago. In both Westgate and Eastgate the local pubs offer excellent restaurants and good company. You will find seperate information on Stanhope which is the largest village in the dale. Wolsingham is the last village in the dale and a similar size to Stanhope. Wolsingham probably has the most choice in restaurants. There is a new and very good Italian restaurant, two local pubs with a good reputation locally and a farm shop just outside Wolsigham offering a good lunchtime meal. The local cafe in the village is also worth a visit and the bakery in Wolsingham is excellent.
