Peterborough in Cambridgeshire is not a typical destination for self catering holidays but you may want to stay in Peterborough for business, to visit friends or to discover what Peterborough has to offer.  Peterborough may also has a number of attractions for train enthusiasts.  Peterborough is a city in Cambridgeshire with a population nearing 200,000. Peterborough therefore isn’t a typical country cottage holiday destination and accommodation is more likely to be found in the form of self catering apartments in this city.  Peterborough has good travel links due to its train line connections with London and cities like Leeds, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh on the East Coast main line. 

Many of the buildings in Peterborough are modern but the city also has some interesting historical sights and attractions.  Peterborough has a rich historical background, which is very much evident at Flag Fen Archaeological Park with its 20 acres of parkland and reconstructions to enjoy. The large reserves of clay in the western regions of Peterborough were earlier utilized by the Romans to set up several industries. One of the ancient buildings present here is the Norman Cathedral, which was established in 650AD.

The other ancient buildings of Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Saint Andrew and Saint Paul earlier used to be monasteries that were established in 655 AD. These buildings were re-constructed to its present form in between 1118 and 1238, making it one of the most popular attractions among the visitors.   Built in the year 1816, the Peterborough Museum and art gallery consisted of the town’s first infirmary between the year 1857 and 1928. The museum attracts a lot of attention due to the small size and large content included in the small museum. To be precise the museum consists of 227,000 objects of archaeological and historical importance such as roman pottery.

Being a city there are of course plenty of shops, restaurants and bars to visit whilst enjoying a self catering break.

Train enthusiasts may want to take a trip on the Nene Valley steam railway that runs from Peterborough along by the River Nene.  Railworld is also to be found in Peterborough.  If you enjoy visiting large country houses there are a number near Peterborough including Elton Hall and Gardens, Burghley House with its rich history and English Heritage’s Longthorpe Tower.
