Shiel cottage stands alone at the foot of a hill, where privacy is assured, half an hour’s drive from any hamlet or settlement. This remote retreat offers a rural escape, a personal bolt hole away from the stresses of civilisation. Go rambling in the countryside, bird watching. Take photographs and enjoy the scenery. Breathe in the fresh air and fully relax.

The whitewashed cottage is able to accommodate up to four guests in its two bedrooms, both of which are doubles. This might suit two couples or a couple of friends who prefer to each have a personal bedroom. Both bedrooms are fitted with pine furniture and have electric heaters to ensure cosy evenings. Temperatures fall quickly in Scotland as the sun goes down.

The spacious bathroom is tiled and has a free standing bath and white suite. Underfloor heating is kind to bare feet when you get undressed to bathe.

Every effort has been made to give the kitchen diner a little love appeal. Rattan hearts and red accessories make for an attractive place to cook and eat. A dining table seats six people. There are all the usual domestic appliances and the freezer which is essential in this remote part of Dumfries and Galloway. The nearest shop is just under thirteen miles away, therefore a little forward planning is needed. It’s not as if you could just pop to the shops when you run out of milk. Saying that, it makes sense to plan a few meals in advance and have all the ingredients that you need to save time and spend your days hiking, jumping brooks, counting deer, or whatever gives you pleasure.

The sitting room has a large wood burner where you could soon have a merry blaze that warms you to your bones, which could be very nice after walking in the hills. There is a book case with a few books and there isn’t any WiFi so you can escape from all the stresses and strains of everyday life.

One dog is welcome, although pets are not permitted in the bedrooms. Most dogs would choose to stay in the comfort of the lounge and sleep close to the warmth of the woodburner.

A washing machine in the utility room will get your clothes into a fit condition before your return to society.

Needless to say, a car is essential in this remote area.

It is possible to fish on the beautiful River Nith with a permit. Stars twinkling in inky black skies are a very good reason to stay here. Learn about the constellations and see the heavens as you have never ever seen them before.

If you do want to go shopping and enjoy some social encounters, half an hour’s journey will take you to Thornhill and a little further to Moffat.
