A land of romantic castles and lofty mountains, Castilla y Leon, or Castile and Leon resounds to the echoes of the great civilisations that have passed through this heartland of Spain. There are lovely cities to discover in Castilla y Leon. Salamanca is home to Spain’s first university and other lovely medieval buildings. Segovia is the site of a majestic aqueduct, built by the Romans and a lovely fairytale Moorish castle, the Alcazar. The cities streets are lined with fascinating buildings including one of the largest Neo-Gothic cathedrals in Spain.
Food in Castilla y Leon is full of robust flavours. The region produces excellent chorizo sausages and these are combined with potatoes and other meats in tasty stews such as la cachelada. Slowly roasted lamb is also a local specialty.
