The Limerick countryside is a land of green plains, rolling hills, lakes and rivers. Unsurprisingly, traditional farms still dot the area and the River Shannon offers good salmon and trout fishing. The Lough Derg Way is a waterside walking path which traces a tranquil line along rivers and canals.
The city of Limerick is a major city with a rich history. Founded on the banks of the River Shannon by the Vikings in 922AD. They used the settlement as a base from which to attack the monastic communities further inland. Later, the Normans settled here and built the magnificent St John's Castle in 1200AD.
Other Medieval buildings such as St Mary's Cathedral soon followed. Today, the castle is a visitor attraction open to the public. Limerick was made famous again in recent times by the novel 'Angela's Ashes'. Fans of the novel will enjoy the 'Angela's Ashes Walking Tour' which takes in the sights and sounds of this atmospheric story.
Limerick is also known as the home of Irish rugby and fans of the game will enjoy a visit to Thomond Park, the home ground of the Munster Rugby team. The sporting tradition continues at the Limerick Greyhound Racing Track, which holds races three times a week and at Limerick Racecourse, a venue for horse racing.
Set amongst woodlands, the village of Adare is considered to be one of Ireland's most charming villages. Known for its traditional thatched cottages and plentiful restaurants, the village is also a great base from which to explore the mysterious ruined abbeys or to enjoy outdoor activities such as horse riding or cycling. The Adare Heritage Centre, set amongst the brightly coloured buildings on the main street, tells the story of Adare from Medieval times.
