County Sligo is a land of lakes and mountains, green valleys, rivers and a long sea coast. The inland lakes are a wonderful place for boating and pleasure cruising, and the Atlantic coast offers up opportunities for surfing, yachting and sea angling. There are clean, safe Blue Flag beaches at the pretty fishing village of Mullaghmore and at Rosses Point.
The county town, also called Sligo, is built on the banks of the River Garavogue. Surrounded by mountains, the town makes a great base to explore the local historical sites such as the Sligo County Museum; the 12th century Sligo Abbey and the Yeats Memorial Building. The famous Irish Poet, Yeats, spent much of his childhood in County Sligo.
Yeats lies buried in the village of Drumcliffe. The village is also notable for monastic remains and the 11th century imposing High Cross. The River Drumcliffe passes nearby and is a popular spot for fishing. d For those seeking a spa experience with a difference, the area is known for its traditional seaweed baths. There is an original early 20th century seaweed bath house in Enniscrone. Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is an archeological site of international importance. Some of the tombs, in this large pagan burial site, may date from 400BC. The graves are marked by huge stones arranged into passage tombs.
