Zakopane in the South East of Poland is arguably Poland’s premier ski resort. It is not only Poles that flock to Zakopane for winter fun but also Russians and other Europeans. For Christmas and winter rentals do book self catering accommodation in or near Zakopane early. For those from the UK or countries with the Euro as their currency, Poland, with the Polish zloty offers by and large good value for money both in terms of the skiing and also in terms of accommodation and eating out. Only 1 hour by car from Krakow, you can either drive to Zakopane (be prepared for queues in peak season) or take the train or the bus.
Zakopane is located in the Tatra mountains and is surrounded by stunning alpine scenery. If you love skiing then you should love Zakopane. It is possible to walk around the centre of Zakopane but do note this is not a small resort so it is often essential to drive to the ski slopes for example or across town depending on where you are staying. With around 13 separate ski runs and over 3 ski schools you should be spoilt for choice in Zakopane. If you fancy trying something different you may want to try your hand at snowboarding instead. Or take a fun trip on a snowmobile. Do remember that attitudes towards health and safety may be a bit more relaxed in Eastern Europe so if you are not provided with a safety helmet straight away, ask for one. It is often the case that the locals don’t bother with these so you may not automatically be given one but when you ask for one you should find it forthcoming. Do take care of your personal safety and make clear your expectations before parting with any cash. Do your bit by demanding helmets, it helps make good health and safety procedures become the norm.
During the evenings, it is possible to take sleigh rides. These horse pulled sleigh rides can be a great way to see Zakopane by day or night and are a romantic option for an evenings entertainment. These trips are not cheap though but do provide a memorable experience.
Zakopane has an attractive main street called Krupowki with shops, restaurants and bars. Many of these have the characteristic wooden exteriors and interiors, in keeping with the alpine feel of Zakopane. If you are looking for a resort with a lively nightlife then Zakopane could be for you. Don’t miss the chance to sample some of the traditional highlander style restaurants, these are often the best. The local tonic of vodka though is best drunk in moderation!
Zakopane has an excellent market, at the bottom of the main street, which is reached via an underpass. Here you can buy various fur coats, fur hats, wooden items, sheepskins, sheepskin gloves and slippers. The fur here is real so not for everyone but do remember that with the climate in Poland in winter, these items do get year after year use and offer a good deal of warmth. If you are after quality souvenirs then head to the market. The quality in the market is often superior to that you will find in the Zakopane shops and largely cheaper. The market is an excellent place to head if you are looking to do some Christmas shopping.
If you want to enjoy skiing or snowmobiling somewhere a little less busy than Zakopane do remember that many of the villages on the outskirts of Zakopane also have ski runs and it is possible to hire snowmobiles at some.
For relaxation you can book a massage or head for one of the thermal baths in or around Zakopane. It is quite an experience to sit in bubbling hot waters whilst feeling the cold winter air on your skin and enjoying views of snow covered countryside.
Although particularly popular at Christmas and winter time, Zakopane is not just a winter destination. Some visit the Tatra mountains during summer for the walking, hiking, wildlife watching and wild flowers.
