Amongst the rolling green hills of County Monaghan much of the traditional Irish way of life can still be seen. Small farming communities and lively market towns characterise this area and traditional crafts such as lace making are kept alive. Of course, modern outdoor activities have found a place amongst the forests and lakes of the area and the visitor can choose from rally driving, paintball, waterskiing and quad biking along with more familiar pursuits such as horse riding, angling, golf, cycling and walking.
For the culinary minded there is a cookery school at Castle Leslie which offers one or two day courses and for those tired out at the thought of all this activity, there are several day spas in the area.
Traditional Irish live music can be experienced at the Garage Theatre in Monaghan, the county town. The town also has a good selection of pubs and restaurants and is the location for the County Museum and the St Louis Convent Heritage Centre.
Carrickmacross is the place to come for traditionally made lace. This is the home of the Convent of the St Louis Nuns and they practise their lace making skills to this day. The Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh came from the nearby village of Inniskeen where there is a resource centre with a permanent exhibition of his life.
