Come for a cottage break on the Kent Downs

Find a country cottage to rent and discover that one of the most rewarding things about going on a self-catering holiday with friends and family is feeling like a local. You can experience a new village or town in a different way to if you were staying in a hotel, as you shop for groceries to cook your favourite meals in the kitchen of your accommodation. You will also have so much more space with a living room, dining room and several bedrooms, and can tailor your trip to suit your needs, adding extra features as well. You might need a cottage that is dog-friendly or want to rent one with a private garden with decking and furniture. There are also pine lodges with character that are perfect for couples, and large houses that are great for birthdays or hen parties.

Stay in the small village of Charing

If you have decided to visit Kent on your holiday cottage break, then you might consider residing in the village of Charing in the heart of the county. Charing is a large village on the edge of the North Downs and is perfect for if you are looking to 'get away from it all' on your break and want to soak up some fresh country air. The village itself has lots of charm and is home to a couple of pubs which are also listed buildings, a tea room and a host of independent shops. One of the main attractions in Charing is the Archbishop’s Palace, which is an important heritage site that dates back to the thirteenth century and is worth visiting. The presence of a railway station with connections to London and the Kent coast is also a blessing if you do not plan to drive.

There are a few meadows and gardens dotted in and around Charing, plus picnic spots, so if you enjoy spending time outdoors then this might be the village for you. It is also well-placed in order to visit other parts of Kent, with the town of Ashford just eight minutes away by train. Ashford is a charming market town on the River Stour and makes a nice day trip. You can also visit Maidstone and Folkestone within a half hour drive from Charing, making it ideal for if you are planning on seeing some of the other main towns of Kent as well.

Charing is a lovely agricultural village and is ideal for a self-catering holiday in a quiet part of Kent, but with plenty to do in the surrounding areas. If you prefer to stay somewhere a bit more secluded and with a homely charm to it, then renting a cottage here might be perfect for you and your loved ones.
