    Leitrim, IrealndCounty Leitrim is a sparsely populated county of Ireland. A land of scenic mountains and lakes and an ideal environment for outdoor activities such as hill walking, horse riding, golf, angling and boating. Pleasure cruisers can be hired from the marina in the riverside town of Carrick-on-Shannon.

    • St Patrick's Hospital in the town functioned as a workhouse during the famine. A memorial garden has been created next to the hospital to remember those who perished.
    • The county has a long agricultural tradition and suffered heavy loses in the Great Irish Famine. The Sliabh An Iarainn Visitor Centre uses audio visual technology to explain the history of County Leitrim, paying particular attention to the history of coal mining in the area.
    • There is also an interesting reconstruction of a 19th century sweathouse, a kind of early sauna, which was used therapeutically to treat all sorts of ailments.
    Villages to explore during your self-catering holiday in County Leitrim:
    • The pretty village of Drumshanbo is set amongst woodland overlooking Lough Allen. The village serves as an ideal base for walking the trails on Sliabh an Iarann Mountain or for angling in the nearby lakes and or in the River Shannon. Nearby, partially submerged in the lake, are the Crannogs, part of a stone-built flooded settlement. There is also a famine graveyard in the village.
    • A historical building well worth a visit in County Leitrim is Parke's Castle. Set on the shore of Lough Gill, this 17th century castle has been beautifully restored and features its own smithy in the courtyard.
