With plenty of horse racing, golf and motor racing, County Kildare is an ideal location for a sporting short break or a corporate event. The Irish National Stud is open to visitors, where you can see the thoroughbred winners of tomorrow. There are three racecourses: Curragh Racecourse, Naas Racecourse and Punchestown, where the Irish National Hunt Festival is held in May.
Ireland hosted the Ryder cup in 2006 and not surprisingly the standard of the golf courses here is excellent including the PGA National Ireland course at Palmerstown House.
The waterways of County Kildare offered opportunities for canal boat hire, salmon and trout fishing and the banks and towpaths are great for cycling and walking.
Motor racing fans can experience the thrills of International Motor Racing at Mondello Park. The area around Athy heritage town is rich for historical discovery.
Athy is a market town, settled since ancient times on the banks of the River Barrow. Today, the Grand Canal converges with the river here. The Athy Heritage Centre exhibition illustrates the town's history through the ages. Kilkea Castle and nearby pagan tumulus are located a short distance from Athy. A little further afield is Castledermot, a historical religious centre with a 14th Franciscan Abbey and Middle Age crosses and graves.
The town of Ballitore is notable as a Quaker settlement. Historical buildings survive here to this day including The Meeting House, which now houses the Quaker Museum.
