Kirdford is a small village located roughly 3 miles north of Petworth in the West Sussex Weald. Two of the loveliest large estates in Southern England - Petworth and Cowdray - lie along the winding valley of the river Rother just to the south. They adjoin Petworth and Midhurst which retain their old character of small country towns and also make good centres for touring the area. North of the River Rother, a maze of tiny streams waters the rich farmlands of the western Weald. Just across the county boundary to the north are the wild heaths and heather-covered hills of Surrey around Haslemere and Hindhead where thousands of acres are safeguarded by the National Trust.
