Carterton is a relatively new town in Oxfordshire about 5 miles west of Witney and is the second largest in West Oxfordshire. In the 1770s the land in the northern part of the town was acquired by the Duke of Marlborough. The present settlement dates back to the 19th century when part of the estate was sold to William Carter. Carterton grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to RAF Brize Norton airbase, the largest employer in the area and the main RAF transport base in the country. There are many shops within the town centre, and there is a market every Thursday.
The wider county of Oxfordshire has a lot to offer the holiday maker with many historical attractions such as the magnificent Blenheim palace, or for the nature lover the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, award winning pubs and restaurants for fine dining, all set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, whose rolling hills and secluded river valleys are perfect for family walks and cycle rides. If you're looking for a cultural getaway or a romantic city break then Oxford is a must. Renowned for its history and heritage, exquisite architecture, and ancient University, Oxford sits at the very heart of this rural county.
