Selkirkshire or the County of Selkirk is an area of the Scottish borders that derives its name from its county town, the Royal burgh of Selkirk. Standing high above the Ettrick and Yarrow valleys, Salkirk is a town of "braes and wynds" and sudden unexpected views. The twin valleys of Ettrick and Yarrow contain some of the most glorious scenery in the Scottish borders, including St. Mary's Loch, noted for its Trout fishing from boat and bank, it is southern Scotland's largest stretch of water.
Other attractions in the area include the Victorian style Bowhill House which showcases a collection of fine paintings and portraits. The House also features rich tapestries and French furniture. Aikwood Tower a 16th century fortified tower in the Ettrick valley houses a recently opened exhibition on the life and work of James Hogg, the "Ettrick Shepherd". A contemporary of Sir Walter Scott, he taught himself to read and write and then while out on the hillsides with his sheep passed the time by composing poems and writing novels.
